The Confucius Institute

Students of the Faculty of Economics and Business in Rijeka as well as other Primorsko-goranska County residents are given the opportunity to learn Chinese from native speakers FREE OF CHARGE and to get acquainted with the rich Chinese culture.

The Confucius Institute is a university educational center established to promote the Chinese language, culture and way of doing business. The Confucius Institute in Zagreb has been set up in partnership by the University of Zagreb and the Headquarters of the Confucius Institutes in Beijing (Hanban) and is the only such institution in the Republic of Croatia. For a number of years, the Institute has been active in promoting the Chinese language and culture, especially among young people, and has been working continuously on establishing better connections between the Republic of Croatia and the People's Republic of China in all areas, especially in business and economy.

The Chinese language is a language of great opportunities – it is spoken by every 5th person in 33 countries of the world. Therefore, it is no wonder that the young people are increasingly turning to learning Chinese which, by the way, is also taught as a subject included in some elementary schools in advanced European countries.

Do you know what is common to the most sought-after managers in Europe? They all have some basic use of the Chinese language! One of the largest, but also fastest-growing industries is setting up strong business relations with Europe which has brought about an increasing demand for Chinese-speaking people.

"Chinese language is not as hard as it looks at the first - the hardest part is the alphabet. Grammar is quite simple – the traditional verb tenses do not exist, there is no gender nor complicated constructs. I have mastered the first degree and I can hardly wait to start the second degree. I think that it is a language of great opportunities as it is spoken by a very large number of people. In my work, I had had contacts with business people coming from the Chinese speaking area but my last time I was even able to exchange (say) a few words in Chinese. I surprised both them and myself! "Do you know what excited me the most? The native speakers. It appeared to me as if I was taking a course in a foreign country and I think that this was the reason why we all managed to learn and use the basic phrases much faster. The second thing I was thrilled about was that it was free. Nowadays when everything has a price I think that this is a wonderful gesture of the Faculty of Economics and Business Rijeka and the Confucius Institute meant for everyone from 0 to 99 years as it is said.
