International study tour of the Faculty of Economics and Business
The students of undergraduate study programs Economics and Business Economics of the Faculty of Economics and Business in Rijeka went on an international study tour from 25 February to 1 March 2019. During those five days, they visited successful international companies and institutions in Slovenia, Italy and Austria. The companies presented themselves and pointed out the opportunities and challenges present in their business. The students also had a tour of their premises.
In Italy, they visited a company with a long tradition of coffee production – ILLY and their Università del Caffè. Besides tasting the final product, the students had a chance to get acquainted with the company history and the process of coffee production by attending a lecture and a company tour.
The greatest number of business entities were visited in Slovenia. The first of them was the Port of Koper, where students could see the size of the Port and the amount of traffic, but also find out more about the cargo that can be found there. The students also visited the startup company Inkubator Savinjske regije in Celje, where they could find out more about the opportunities for the young and about future entrepreneurs, but also about startups in Slovenia and the ways of financing good ideas. During the company tour, the students could see the new areas used by the current users of their services and get more acquainted with the whole startup concept.
In Maribor, the students visited the Post of Slovenia (Pošta Slovenije), where they had an opportunity to find out more about the organization and the business activities of the Post. Since they visited the Logistics Centre, they had a tour of the world-famous manufacturers’ product warehouses and got acquainted with the whole process of receiving and distributing mail, as well as with the other services offered to the Post’s clients.
At the Austrian chocolate factory Zotter, the students attended an interesting lecture about the beginning of today’s world-famous chocolate production, and some of them managed to take a photo with the owner himself – Josef Zotter. After the lecture, the company tour was organized, which included the tasting of cocoa beans, cocoa butter, and the final product – more than 200 kinds of chocolate. The students also had a chance to see the production process, the storage and the final product distribution.
The last day of the study tour, the students visited the Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt and its campus. Professor Sanja Korać held a lecture about the students’ opportunities, and in the build! startup company, which is situated within the campus, the director welcomed the students, presented the work of the company and pointed out the possibilities offered to young entrepreneurs.
On their way back to Rijeka, the students visited RIKO Ltd., a company in Ljubljana which provides modern and ecologically acceptable technological solutions. The representatives of the company presented their business activities and the most important projects. They also pointed out the greatest challenges they encountered in their long-standing business and explained how they responded to them. Besides that, they answered the students’ questions about the similarities and differences when it comes to conducting business with partners from different countries.
