FACULTY OF ECONOMICS AND BUSINESS, UNIVERSITY OF RIJEKA
announces a

 

 

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

for enrollment in the Doctoral Study Programme in Economics and Business Economics for the academic year 2026/2027, leading to the academic degree of Doctor of Science (PhD) in Economics.

 

 

The doctoral programme is offered on a part-time basis, lasts three (3) years, and upon completion candidates acquire 180 ECTS credits.



Admission Requirements

The doctoral programme is open to:

  1. Candidates who have completed a university undergraduate and graduate study programme or an integrated undergraduate and graduate study programme in the fields of social sciences, humanities, or other fields (with a total of 300 ECTS credits);
  2. Candidates who have completed a university undergraduate study programme in the fields of social sciences, humanities, or other fields under regulations in force prior to the current Act;
  3. Candidates who have completed a university specialist postgraduate study programme and obtained the academic title of Specialist in Economics or an equivalent postgraduate qualification under previous regulations (level 7.2 of the Croatian Qualifications Framework);
  4. Candidates who have completed a scientific Master’s programme in Economics or Business Economics under previous regulations.

For candidates without a background in social sciences (field of economics), the Committee for Postgraduate Studies and Doctorates may, upon recommendation of the Committee for Recognition of Prior Learning, require the completion of bridging (differential) examinations.

Proficiency in English, including business English, is a mandatory requirement for admission.


 

Selection Criteria

Applicants are ranked in accordance with Article 6 of the Doctoral Study Regulations, based on:

  • Grade point average from previous studies
  • Doctoral dissertation topic proposal
  • Proficiency in business English
  • Prior agreement with a mentor / availability of a mentor
  • Awards and scientific/research achievements
  • Recommendation from a prospective supervisor or a university professor familiar with the applicant’s academic performance
  • Interview with the Committee for Postgraduate Studies and Doctorates

The Committee may propose rejection of an application regardless of formal eligibility if a suitable mentor cannot be appointed in the proposed research area.


 
Application Procedure and Required Documentation

Applications must be submitted via the online application system and include the following:

  • Certified copies of all diplomas 
  • Academic transcript and GPA
  • One academic reference letter (mandatory if GPA is below 3.5)
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Motivation letter in English
  • Doctoral dissertation topic proposal
  • If available, written consent of a prospective mentor (not mandatory, but positively considered)
  • Proof of English language proficiency (e.g., academic transcripts, TOEFL, ESOL, or similar; the Faculty may conduct its own assessment if necessary)
  • Statement on payment of tuition fees (self-funded or employer-funded)
  • Personal identification number (OIB) certificate (it must be obtained upon enrollment - https://porezna-uprava.gov.hr/en/foreign-person/7873
  • Evidence of scientific and professional achievements (if applicable)
  • Decision on recognition of foreign higher education qualifications (for applicants who obtained qualifications abroad)
  • Proof of citizenship (for international applicants)


Additional Information

  • Admission quota: 20 candidates
  • Application deadline: 17 July 2026
  • Tuition fee: EUR 12,500 (payable in four instalments)

Doctoral Program in Economics and Business are carried out as full-time or part-time study programs lasting 3 years and awarding a total of 180 ECTS credits upon program completion. 


The doctoral program may be enrolled by:


1. A person who has completed university undergraduate and university graduate study program or integrated undergraduate and graduate study program in the field of social sciences, humanities or other sciences (with completion of which 300 ECTS are obtained);
2. A person who has completed undergraduate university study program in the field of social sciences, humanities or other sciences, in accordance with the Regulations valid prior to the enforcement of the Act on Scientific  Activity and Higher Education (hereinafter: the Act);
3. A person who has completed university specialist study program and obtained academic title as a specialist of Economics or completed an equivalent postgraduate study according to the rules in force prior to the entry into force of the Act (level 7.2 per CROQF)
4. A person who has completed a Master's degree in Economics or Business Economics in accordance with the regulations in force before the entry into force of the Act
 
For persons who have not completed university undergraduate and university graduate study program or integrated undergraduate and graduate study program in the field of social sciences, the field of economics, the Committee for postgraduate studies and doctorates will determine the examination of differences on the proposal of the Commission for recognition of prior learning.

 

 

The applicant needs to have active knowledge of (business) English. 

 

Ranking criteria

The ranking of applicants is done in line with Article 6 of the Regulations on Doctoral Program in Economics and Business at the Faculty of Economics and Business in Rijeka (hereinafter: the Regulations)

 

Applicants will be ranked according to the following criteria:

  • GPA achieved during previous studies,
  • doctoral dissertation topic proposal,
  • business English language skills,
  • the existence of a potential supervisor who has agreed to mentor the respective candidate,
  • awards, current research and scientific achievements, 
  • references given by the potential supervisor/mentor or university professors acquainted with the academic achievements of the respective applicant,
  • interview with the Committee for Postgraduate Studies and Doctorates (hereinafter. The Committee). The Committee may choose to propose to the Faculty Council to reject an application even though the applicant has met other admission requirements if the Committee establishes that the Faculty cannot ensure a suitable supervisor for the respective field of scientific interest i.e. scientific field in which the applicant wants to pursue his/her research in.

·         The Mentorship consent (Official EFRI form) signed by the potential supervisor/advisor meeting the eligibility criteria for mentoring doctoral students at the University of Rijeka and the Faculty of Economics and Business   in Rijeka as defined under Article 13 of the Regulations . The respective supervisor or advisor does not have to be a member of the Faculty’s teaching staff; he/she may be from other scientific institutions in Croatia or abroad.   In the event that the applicant does not possess such consent, the Faculty shall upon enrollment assist the candidate in finding a suitable supervisor/co-supervisor/counselor

·         Decision on the Recognition of foreign higher education qualifications

2.   A person who has completed a corresponding four-year pre-Bologna university study program in economics or business economics in accordance with the regulations valid prior to the enforcement of the Act on Scientific  Activity and Higher Education (hereinafter: the Act); 

3.    A person who has not completed a corresponding study program defined under items 1 and 2 of this paragraph may enroll the doctoral program if he/she has completed one of the following study programs in social sciences in the field of economics:    

  • Scientific master study program in accordance with the regulations valid prior to the enforcement of the Act; 
  •  Postgraduate vocational study program in economics or business economics in accordance with the regulations valid prior to the enforcement of the Act, under the condition that they shall pass the differential exams in the following courses: Microeconomics and Macroeconomics; 
  • Postgraduate specialist study program in economics or business economics in accordance with the provisions of the Act, under the condition that they shall pass the differential exams in the following courses: Microeconomics and Macroeconomics.

The University Postgraduate Studies (Doctoral Program) in Economics and Business are carried out as full-time or part-time study programs lasting 3 years and awarding a total of 180 ECTS credits upon program completion. 


 

The doctoral program may be enrolled by: 

 

1.   A person who has completed a corresponding university graduate study program in economics or business economics;
