Summary
The start of the new decade is potentially representing a crucial moment for the future of globalisation and all integration processes worldwide. The COVID-19 outbreak and the associated urgent economic measures taken by countries worldwide will have huge effects on trade, transport, employment and economic growth. So far, it seems that the role of the State is crucial to handle this crises. International institutions and integration projects seem to be caught by fast events related to consequences of lockdowns, closure of borders and other restrictions. Individual countries are mostly introducing broad measures to handle urgent needs of the national economy; the markets are in distress; the workers are loosing jobs too fast; the trade patterns and production are devastated; transport and tourism collapsed. But, can the State (especially in the case of small, open, globalized economies) handle with this new reality alone? This is the crucial question.

Main scientific achievements of the project:

The research in the 1st year of the project period covered preparatory activities and scientific work, but international mobility of project team members was rearranged or postponed due to unforeseen repercussions related to the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2nd year had more concentrated activities related to the dissemination of research results.

An important segment of the planned activities is the progress of the two PhD students involved in the project: Ismar Velić has finished with his Dissertation, and successfully ‘defended’ it in early spring 2022, while Danijel Jukić has started with his first public presentation of the research topic directly connected to the project idea. Both PhD students already presented part of their research during the project period (and should be able to present them also in 2023), as a result of this project’s research goals: the analysis of trade patterns and policies of different countries, related trends and practices of economic subjects involved in integrations and international trade, as well as related policies. The main aim of their research is to identify specific effects of trade liberalization and/or protectionism.

During the two years of the project implementation, project members published several scientific articles  and participated in (at least) 10 international conferences with 15 presentations. A significant published paper related to this project is: "Intra-industry trade and Implications of the European Union-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement from the perspective of the Automotive Industry”. However, most important papers include:

Regardless of the fact that several activities have been postponed or rearranged, the members of the project team were successful in achieving the main goals of the project.

Realised mobility of research team members:

As stated in the project proposal [pre-covid-19 period], a few research-based and/or training mobility activities were envisaged, especially for the project leader and the PhD students. Primarily, it should have been the case of mutual mobility between Rijeka and Poland [University of Economics and Business in Wroclaw], where two "external" members of the team are located. This should have allowed the exchange of ideas, data and other relevant information. Besides that, other destinations for mobility were foreseen.

Due to the global (pandemic) situation, various international travelling obstacles and health restraints, plans for the mobility of project team members had to be rearranged, including virtual meetings and on-line consultations. Some on-line meetings and occasional communication was performed during 2021, especially between the project manager and the colleagues from Wroclaw University of Economics and Business.

Originally, Igor Cvečić was granted a 4-week CEEPUS mobility grant for March/April 2020, which was postponed to spring 2021, but after continuing restrictive practices and the epidemiological situation, the network decided to cancel the mobility. As an alternative, Igor Cvečić managed to organize an ERASMUS supported 4-week period of mobility during November/December 2022 in Wroclaw. This allowed the finalisation of joint papers (IBIMA 2022) and discussion about further collaboration. Additionally, Pawel Dobrzanski has been granted a position of a "Visiting Scholar” at the Minda de Gunzburg Center for European Studies, at the Harvard University (USA), during the period 2021-2022. However, this virtual mobility position should be extended to 2023 [and/or 2024], but with a ‘physical’ presence in the USA, as well.

Dissemination of research results:

Dissemination of the project results was mostly accomplished during the project period, but some outputs are scheduled to be published/presented in 2023.

It includes workshops and discussions organized in July 2022: During the EFRI Summer School 2022, Igor Cvečić led the discussion entitled: "Liberalisation, Integration, Globalisation: Affirmation of Protectionism?” on July 13th, while Pavle Jakovac led the discussion entitled "EU on the Verge of Balkanization (with a little pinch of Globalization and the Future of Capitalism)” on July 5th. Additionally, members of the project team participated in the round table on Contemporary Challenges and the Future of European Integration on July 7th.

During the final phase of the project, members of the research team were involved in the preparation of several summaries of research outputs, which will be disseminated in several ways:

(a)     Most important outputs should be visible on the official website of the Faculty:

(b)     A combined publication with several summaries and non-published texts related to the Project should be published during 2023. The publication will also be used as a teaching material.

(c)     Igor Cvečić and Marko Tomljanović will participate in the 12th International Scientific Symposium "Region, Entrepreneurship, Development in June 2023, in Osijek, and present the project, focusing on a paper prepared with a student (Danijela Lah) on the topic of ‘Globalisation trends of European Mergers and Acquisitions’.

Project team members’ published scientific articles are available to the wider public through relevant scientific portals such as the Croatian scientific bibliography (https://bib.irb.hr/), Google Scholar (https://scholar.google.hr/), OrcID (https://orcid.org) and Researchgate (https://www.researchgate.net/).

Each presented or published scientific paper clearly denotes that it was created as part of this scientific project.

Defended doctoral thesis:

The project team included 2 PhD students, both mentored by the project manager: (1) Ismar Velić & (2) Danijel Jukić. Both enrolled in the Postgraduate Doctoral Study Programme of Economy and Business Economy at the Faculty of Economics and Business in Rijeka.

During the 1st year of the project, Ismar Velić completed his dissertation entitled ‘MONETARY INTEGRATION AND FDI IN THE NEW EU MEMBER STATES’, and officially handed in the manuscript for the Scientific Committee assessment, which led to the final defence or the thesis in March 2022. His research is an important contribution to the project as he deals with effects of economic and monetary integration as tools of economic progress and investment flows, especially for small open economies faced with globalization.

Danijel Jukić started his studies in spring 2020, and actively fulfilled his obligations during both years of the project: Attended compulsory and elective courses; Presented his preliminary research idea on a scientific colloquia in December 2021 [topic: "Trade Policies of the EU – Neo-protectionism in the Case of Brexit”]; During spring 2023 he is scheduled to participate in a scientific conference with his research topic and prepare his official proposal of the doctoral thesis.
